Lilongwe was first made the capitol of Malawi in 1975, so in the 1960's and 70's a whole new downtown area was created, this area is not particularly interesting for tourists. Lilongwe's old city district on the other hand is buzzing with market atmosphere, cosy restaurants, cafés, and hotels. The two city areas are separated by a nature reserve where 150 hectares of forest surrounds the Lingadzu River and its crocodiles. The paths through the forest are very revealing.

The wonderful market in Old Town is full of life. You can buy anything at the market, but even if you do not intend to do any shopping it is worth a visit just to walk around and take in the atmosphere.
