In the eastern part of Slovakia lies Kosice. A charming, old commercial town, which has enjoyed its strategic position between the Baltic Sea and the Balkans. The city with its many attractions has a good cultural life with museums, theatres and a fine philharmonic orchestra. In 1950 the Communists placed a steel mill near the city, which boosted the economy. Today 20.000 people work at the mill and Kosice is Slovakia's second-largest city with more than a quarter of a million inhabitants.

The present theatre in Kosice, designed by Adolf Land, was built at record speed between 1897 and 1899. Ede Mayer made the theatre's ornaments from Budapest, and the Austrian decorator Peregrin Gastgeb painted the ceiling. Between 1987 and 1994 the building went through an extensive restoration on the basis of drawings by the two architects Ratislav Janak and Miroslav Mudrovcik.
