About 150 kilometres from the nearest river and about three hours drive from Damascus, the Palmyra oasis can be found, solemnly in the desert. The almost 4000 years old city was originally founded by the Greeks and then taken over by the Romans before the popular Zenobia took over control of the city. With her as a leading figure, the city fell in the hands of the emperor, Aurelian, and then this city experienced its downfall: Fires destroyed it and the Muslims took over until an earthquake put a final end to this almost 1000 years ago. Today, the city is almost entirely buried, and some of the statues may be seen in Glyptoteket in Copenhagen, Denmark.
