Attractions from South Africa

Cape Town

Castle of Good Hope and The African Museum

The Castle of Good Hope was built between 1666 and 1679 and is one of the oldest European buildings in South Africa. The African Museum is a curious and somewhat scary place. Here you'll meet stuffed African animals of all kinds and bloodthirsty dinosaurs.

Kirtenbosch Botanical Garden

Kirtenbosch Botanical Garden lies on the eastern side of Table Mountain. The garden is incredibly beautiful and idyllic. It's almost only wild plants, which grow in the garden.

Table Mountain

Table Mountain is a popular attraction in Cape Town and many people choose to go there by cable car. It's an expensive ride, but worthwhile. If it's a clear day, the summit provides an excellent view and there are a lot of nice walks in the area - especially in the spring when all the flowers are blooming.

The Victorian Harbour

The old Victorian harbour in Cape Town is a great draw to many tourists and citizens. Very often the place offers free entertainment and there is a wealth of shops, cafés, bars and restaurants. Water sports- and shopping facilities are excellent.

Drakensberg

Mountain Climbing and Trekking

One of the greatest attractions at Drakensberg is of course the landscape itself, and the area has great conditions for mountaineers and people who want to trek. Some of the most popular treks are the Champagne Castle, Cathkin Peak and Cathedral Peak. You can also do these trails on horseback.

Royal Natal National Park

There are several national parks at Drakensberg. The most interesting is Royal Natal National Park, which e.g. hides an impressive amphitheatre deep inside. This is also where you'll find the waterfalls Tugela Falls, which fall 850 metres in five storeys of rocks. An amazing sight which cannot miss during a visit.

The Caves at Giants Castle Game Reserve

In these caves you can see clear signs of life. The aboriginal Bushmen lived in these caves until 100 years ago and more than 500 of there interesting paintings decorate the walls. The area, which is situated at the border to Lesotho, also offers the opportunity to meet antilopes and a wealth of different bird species.

Durban

Durban Beaches

The Durban beaches are fantastic. The main beach is the Golden Mile, which stretches six kilometres and attracts a lot of people. Unfortunately also thieves. The smaller beaches, which stretch both to the north and to the south, are safer, quieter and not so crowded.

The Indian District

Durban has a significant concentration of Indian people and west of the centre of the city lies the Indian district. The area is colourful and lively. Here you'll find markets, temples and well-preserved buildings from the turn of the century. The Indian district has also several mosques, e.g the Juma Musjid Mosque.

The Suburb Cato Minor

The western suburb Cato Minor is a fascinating mix of poor huts and shanties and beautiful temples. Here lies the temple with the long name Shree Alayam Second River Hindu Temple, which every year sets the scene for a festival where the main event is to walk on red-hot coals.

Town Hall

The striking town hall in Durban is more than a town hall. The big building also houses an impressive collection of black South African art and an exciting natural science museum.

Johannesburg

Soweto Township

Soweto is a large township southwest of Johannesburg. It's a variegated and rather hideous neighbourhood where the black population lives in huts and shanties. Most white South Africans have never been in a township - and especially not Soweto, which is an area in deep social misery. If you want to visit Soweto you should consult some locals and perhaps have a coloured person take you there.

The Yeoville district

Just outside the centre of Johanneburg lies Yeoville, which, contrary to e.g Soweto, is a safe and peaceful place. The area is somewhat bohemian and in Rockey Street you can have a cappuccino or a café latte at one of the many cafés or bars.

Kalahari Gemsbok National Park

Namaqualand

To the west lies Namaqualand, which is half desert, but at the same time also incredibly lush scenery of a wealth of flowers which shoot up after the winter rain. The region has two large copper mines and, due to the landscape, worth a visit.

Wildlife

Wildlife is the only, but also the most amazing attraction you can imagine in Kalahari Gemsbok National Park. Antelopes cross the boarder between Botswana and South Africa in their eternal search for water, lions roar at night and hyenas, wild dogs, foxes and leopards are just some of the species which inhabit the almost 3 million hectare large park.

Kruger National Park

Hot springs

In the southern part of Kruger National Park you can enjoy a hot bath. The area has many hot springs to soothe you body.

Pietersburg

In the middle of the park is Pietersburg, which is the capital of the area. Here you can e.g. see the Bakone Malapa museum south of the city centre.

The Waterberg Mountains

In the west lies the Waterberg Mountain, impressive scenery that offers some fantastic trekking opportunities.

Venda and Gazankulu

Venda and Gazankulu Villages are small rural societies northeast of the park. These places are known for their handicrafts.

Wildlife

Kruger National Park offers an overwhelming range of wildlife. Here you can see lions, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, antelopes and many more in their natural surroundings. It's a somewhat different and more intense experience than in the Zoo.

South Africa

Little Karoo area

Between Cape Town and The Garden Route there is an interesting alternate route through Little Karoo. The area is famed for its ostriches, which thrive in the sunny and dry climate. Here you'll also see very beautiful scenery with wild flowers.

Mossel Bay, Herolds Bay og Buffalo Bay

If you don't want too much going on during you trip on The Garden Route, you can go to Mossel Bay, Herold's Bay or Buffalo Bay. Here it is more peaceful and quiet, but the beaches are just as nice as anywhere else.

The Port St Johns province

At the Umzimvubu estuary in the eastern Cape-province lies Port St Johns. Here you'll meet primarily the black population, and this in a nice atmosphere. The city is home of many artists and has some incredibly nice beaches surrounded by a beautiful, dramatic cliff scenery.

Tsitsikamma Coastal National Park.

This national park is certainly worth a visit. Here lies the Swartberg Mountains and a natural wild forest which is home of elephants. The scenery in the area is fantastic and in the Swartberg Mountains you can see The Cango Caves.
