Black River Gorges National Park

The Lake Grand Bassin

Grand Bassin is one of the islands two natural lakes. The lake is in the crater of extinct volcano. A large number of Hindi pilgrims go on a pilgrimage to the lake, especially around Maha Shivaratree

The Mountain Black River Peak

Black River Peak is 828 metres high and the highest point at Mauritius. There are good trekking paths to the top of the mountain.

The View Point Riviére Noire

From here you have a fabulous view of the Black River Peak and some of the park's beautiful waterfalls. The viewpoint lies some kilometres east of Grand Bassin.

Casela Bird Sanctuary

This 8 ha beautiful garden with fishponds has more than 90 voiles and 140 Mauritian bird species. Among other things you can see the rare pink dove and the white peacock. In connection to the park lies a small zoo with tigers, panthers and lemurs

Coral Workshops

There are several workshops on the island that manufacture the beautiful corals you can find everywhere on the island. In the workshops you can among other things buy small baskets.

La Vanille Crocodile and Nature Sanctuary

The crocodiles on the farm are imported from Madagaskar but originally descend from the muddy waters of the Nile. The crocodiles are separated in different enclosures dependent on how evolved they are. If you take a walk in the jungle-like area you will also discover many other animals. Among the animals that live in the area you can see monkeys, wild boars and giant turtles more than 150 years old.

Museum of Indian Immigration

This museum is a part of The Gandhi Institute and has more than 2000 archives dated from the period 1842-1910. At the museum you can also find a smaller collection of objects of art. Among these objects are jewels from the early Indian immigrants, traditional music instruments and books. The museum is placed near the university city Moka.

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolams Botanical Gardens

The governor Mahé de La Bourdonnais founded the botanical gardens in 1735. The real purpose of the gardens was to function as a kitchen garden for the governor's castle nearby. There are many fascinating flowers in the gardens, but the biggest attraction is probably the white Victorian lilly, which comes out as white one day and closes as a red flower the next day.

The Adeleide Fortress

The Adeleide Fortress is the only fortress out of Port Louis' four, which is not in ruins. The architectural style of Adeleide Fortress has so much resemblance to a Mauritian fortress that the locals call it "The Citadel". The fortress has a spectacular view.

The Beach Area Trous aux Biches

Trou aux Biches is a large beach area in the North-western corner of the island. In the city Mon Choisy you will find some of the best public beaches on the island.

The Chamarel Area

In Chamarel you will find a large area with what appears to be waving sand hills but what is in fact coloured earth. The earth changes its colours from red to purple and it is thought to originate from a volcano. An impressive waterfall sends cascades of water down in the valley nearby.

The cliffs Falaise

A river turns into a waterfall as it runs through a number of cliffs near Bellefontaine. The water splashes on the people swimming in the natural swimming pool underneath the cascades. It is a great tourist attraction on a hot day.

The Eureka House

Near Moka city you will find the Euroka House, which was build in the 1830's. The house, which has a magnificent view over the valley, was restored in 1986 and now serves as a museum. The museum is dedicated to music, art and old maps.

The Tea Farm Bois Cheri

Bois Cheir is a 600 ha big tea farm. Here the tea is both picked and packed. The farm is placed a little bit north of Souillac. A tour on the tea farm includes a lunch in the main building of an old sugar plantation called Le Saint Aubin. The main building was built in 1819.

The Volcano Trou aux Cerfs

Trou aux Cerfs is a crater from a burned out Volcano. The fascinating natural phenomena Trou aux cerfs lies in Curepipe and is 85 metres deep and 200 metres wide. Trou aux Cerfs is also famous a fabulous view over the plains in the centre of the island.

Walking on the Bottom of the Sea

If you are afraid of diving Mauritius offers a walk at the bottom of the lagoons among the colourful fish. Before the walk you are given a special diver's helmet that supplies you with air from a boat placed on the surface. You can now take a walk among the fish and stay on a level where you can reach the bottom.

Port Louis

Port Louis Market

The city's market in the heart of the city lies close to the sea. At the market you can buy fresh fish, meat, fruit, souvenirs, clothes and other stuff. If you want to buy something at the market you must be prepared to haggle over the price.

The Jummah Mosque

The island's main mosque The Jummah Mosque is oddly placed in the middle of Chinatown. It was built in the 1850s and has beautifully carved wooden doors. The mosque is open for visitors each day with the exception of Thursdays and Fridays where it is closed between 10.00 to 12.00.

The Natural History Museum

Most tourists come to the museum to see the stuffed specimen of the extinct bird the Dront. The Dront was an enormous species of doves and was exterminated. The Dront is not the only extinct bird that can be found at the museum, which also has an enormous library.

The Bay Anse aux Anglais

The small bay, the English Bay, got its name from a British squadron, which occupied the island a couple of months the middle of the 18th century.
