Best time to visit

Scotland's weather can change quickly throughout the year. One minute it can be sunny and bright and the next cloudy with rain. May and June are the best months to go because it tends to be drier, but it is always a good idea to bring an umbrella. The East coast is usually cool and dry and the West coast is mild and wet. Weather in mountainous areas varies dramatically, so ensure that you have adequate clothing and equipment. Temperature Average Jan 3° to 5° C (37° - 41° F) July 13° to 15° C (55° - 59° F)

Drug related crime is well documented in Scotland as in most large cities. Always keep your valuables with you and never leave them lying around. Beggars are in most major towns and may approach you for money. Give them money if you want to, but never feel pressured to do so. Midges are rife during the summer months especially in the Highlands. From May to August use an effective insect repellent and keep yourself covered, particularly in the evening and wear light coloured clothing. Be aware that some parts of Scotland are very anti-English.
