Best time to visit

Jacmel can be visited all year round, but the city is especially exciting to visit in the weeks leading up to the Mardi Gras festivities on the last Tuesday before Lent. Every Sunday until Mardi Gras the revels escalate in the streets of Jacmel.

Local conditions

Time zone

Haiti is four hours behind GMT. When it's noon in the UK, it's 8 am in Jacmel.

Culture and entertainment

The Jacmel carnival is second to none. The festivities run for several weeks before they culminate at Mardi Gras, the last Tuesday before Lent. The streets come alive with performances and the local population dressed up in amazing colourful costumes resembling devils and supernatural creatures.

Accommodation / Hotel

Despite its obvious potential as a tourist city, Jacmel doesn't have too many accommodation facilities. During the carnival it is especially hard to find a hotel room, so it is advisable to book ahead. In the small towns on the south coast it is usually possible to find a hotel or two where you can get a room. Book your hotel in Jacmel and the Southern Coast here
